Long Live the Moustache! by Milly Woodard

The moustache has had a long and illustrious history. Archaeologists believe even cavemen shaped their facial hair into moustaches using shells and tweezers made of animal bones.

Sported by King Charles I in 1600, who popularised the goatee and handlebar moustache, and later adopted by gentlemen dandies during the Regency period, the moustache was the hairy adornment worn by such luminaries as Lord Byron with his perfectly twisted version. But the moustache as it is known today really came into its own in England during the Elizabethan era.

There have been many more iconic moustache wearers through the ages. Salvador Dali’s moustache – worn in the “ten past ten” position – must perhaps be considered one of the most famous in history.

In more recent history, moustaches were popular in the Seventies – worn by the likes of actor Tom Selleck, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tom_Selleck well known for his portrayal of private investigator Thomas Magnum in TV series Magnum P.I.

Always popular with older men, the moustache returned to popularity in the early 2000s with young and old men alike with the launch of the Movember movement. Since 2003, Movember https://uk.movember.com/ has funded more than 1,250 men’s health projects around the world, challenging the status quo, shaking up men’s health research and transforming the way health services reach and support men.

The charity exists to help men live happier, healthier and longer lives. It funds projects to help in the fight against https://uk.movember.com/about/prostate-cancer prostate cancer, testicular cancer https://uk.movember.com/about/testicular-cancer, https://uk.movember.com/about/mental-health, mental health and suicide.

By 2030, the charity hopes to have reduced the number of men dying prematurely by 25%.

From humble beginnings of just thirty men, the Movember movement has grown into a truly global one. It has made amazing progress in men’s health, and every whisker of credit goes to the Mo Bros and Mo Sisters around the world who have supported the charity – five million since 2003.
